Undergraduate Student Organizations

The Department of Communication offers several student organizations to connect fellow Communication majors.

Black Communication Society

The Black Communication Society was created by students to develop a union of communication students of color dedicated to truth and excellence in all communication professions. The Black Communication Society shall provide an outlet for minority opinion, as well as provide a venue for professional enrichment in future communication endeavors.

They strive to recognize, foster and reward outstanding scholastic achievement in communication studies; stimulate interest in the field of communication; promote and encourage professional development among communication majors; provide an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas in the field of communication; establish and maintain closer relationships between faculty and students; and explore options for graduate education in communication studies.

Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA)

The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is a nationally recognized, dues-paying, professional organization. PRSSA is made up of more than 10,000 students across the country and offers professional development, networking opportunities and news. The UMD Chapter of PRSSA develops several events throughout the year to connect students with exciting opportunities in the field of public relations. In the past, we have taken field trips to the D.C. offices of PR giants Edelman, Fleishman-Hillard, Ketchum and Ogilvy. We have also had alumni panels, resume workshops and professional guest speakers.

Dues are collected annually in October and February and cost $65. Membership has several benefits, including being moved to the top of the list for events that have a limit of attendees (most agency field trips only allow for 10-15 people) and receiving access codes to the PRSSA.org internship and job posting websites.

If you are interested, fill out an application form and deliver the cash/check to the PRSSA Chapter mailbox located on the 2nd floor of Skinner near the administrative offices. You can also mail the check and completed application to: UMd PRSSA Chapter Treasurer, c/o Communication Department, 2130 Skinner Bldg., University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742.  Applications are due on October 19 in the fall and February 22 in the spring.

Undergraduate Communication Association (UCA)

The Undergraduate Communication Association (UCA) is a student-run organization open to all majors in the Department of Communication. Members of UCA develop and demonstrate leadership working with a faculty advisor to plan social events and cocurricular activities for communication majors. Membership in the organization provides a great opportunity to get to interact with other communication majors, share information about internships and network with alumni, faculty and members of the community. UCA also sponsors workshops and events that enhance students' professional skills. Each year UCA sponsors and hosts many events including course review sessions, communication skill workshops and networking events.
