The Department of Communication stands against hate and violence and against those who refuse to denounce acts, words, and symbols that promote racism, antisemitism, white nationalism, and white supremacy. We stand in solidarity with those who support peace, reconciliation, and justice in Charlottesville and across the country.

We are saddened, concerned, and angered by recent racially-motivated incidents at the University of Maryland, including white supremacist flyers distributed around campus, a noose found hanging in a fraternity house, and the senseless murder of Richard W. Collins III from Bowie State University.  We recognize that these are not isolated incidents, but instead the result of pervasive racism.

The Philip Merrill College of Journalism held a scholarship and practice symposium titled, “Change and Challenge: 100 Days of Journalism During the Trump Administration,” on May 3, in Knight Hall. The symposium – sponsored by the Merrill Graduate Student Association –  featured University of Maryland researchers from across campus and reporters who are covering the White House and politics.
