Assistant professor Sahar Khamis is the recipient of a 2011-2012 CTE-Lilly Fellowship from the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Office of Undergraduate Studies. The fellowship allows Khamis to join with other campus faculty members as a means to continue her efforts to improve undergraduate education at the University of Maryland by meeting regularly during the academic year to provide insights and guidance in the implementation of the Scholarship in Practice category of the new UM General Education

Assistant professor Xiaoli Nan has received a $150,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to study health communication messages associated with the HPV vaccine.

Nan's 2-year project will develop communication interventions aimed at improving acceptance of adolescent HPV vaccination for the prevention of cervical cancer among caregivers of African-American girls aged 9-17.

Maddux Receives Book Awards

Assistant professor Kristy Maddux has received the 2011 Outstanding Book Award from the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender. Maddux also received the 2011 Religious Communication Book Award, given by the Religious Communication Association. The awards are for The Faithful Citizen: Popular Christian Media and Gendered Civic Identities published by Baylor University Press.
