UM Department of Communication faculty members and graduate students received awards and participated in research panels at the 100th annual convention of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). Professor and chair Elizabeth Toth co-authored an essay with Ph.D. student Rowena Briones entitled "The State of PR Graduate Curriculum as We Know It: A Longitudinal Analysis," that received second place in the teaching paper competition in the Public Relations Division.

Fink & Waks Co-Author Study of Candidate Evaluations

Professor Edward Fink and senior lecturer Leah Waks are co-authors of a study entitled "Sequential Information Integration and Belief Trajectories: An Experimental Study Using Candidate Evaluations." The article appears in the June 2012 issue of Communication Monographs. The other co-authors are Sunjeun Chung and Xiaoying Xie (both UM Ph.D. alumni) and Michael Meffert, a former faculty member in the Department of Communication.

Fink Co-Authors Study of Avoidance Strategies

Professor Edward Fink is the co-author of a study that appears in the latest issue of Human Communication Research. The study, entitled "The Effect of Conflict Goals on Avoidance Strategies: What Does Not Communicating Communicate?" is also authored by Ph.D. alumna Qi Wang and Temple University's Deborah Cai.

Ph.D. student Steven Cohen received the Golden Key International Honour Society Graduate Scholar Award, a $10,000 scholarship that provides support for graduate study. The Golden Key Scholar Award is the Society's premier scholarship for academics, leadership, and service.

Assistant professor Sahar Khamis is the recipient of a 2011-2012 CTE-Lilly Fellowship from the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Office of Undergraduate Studies. The fellowship allows Khamis to join with other campus faculty members as a means to continue her efforts to improve undergraduate education at the University of Maryland by meeting regularly during the academic year to provide insights and guidance in the implementation of the Scholarship in Practice category of the new UM General Education

Nan Awarded Major Grant from NIH

Xiaoli Nan

Assistant professor Xiaoli Nan has received a $150,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to study health communication messages associated with the HPV vaccine.

Nan's 2-year project will develop communication interventions aimed at improving acceptance of adolescent HPV vaccination for the prevention of cervical cancer among caregivers of African-American girls aged 9-17.
