News Media Feature UM Faculty, Graduate Students
Several UM Department of Communication faculty members and graduate students were featured in news media outlets and quoted in news articles in 2012 and 2013.
Lecturer Steven Cohen was quoted in an article entitled "The Subtle Secrets of Charisma," in The Financial Times, January 2, 2013.
Research professor Kathleen Kendall was featured in several stories during the primary and general election season, including a story the Capital News Service ("Romney Wins Maryland--In Early Presidential Money Race," Nov. 2, 2011", on in The Diamondback ("How Music and Celebrity Affect Political Campaigns,"), and five stories in The Epoch Times (Oct. 1, "Obama, Romney Prepare for Debates"; Oct. 4, "Obama, Romney Square Off in First Debate"; Oct. 5, "Experts Critique First Presidential Debate"; Oct. 17, "Obama Gains Ground in Challenging 2nd Debate"; and Oct. 21, "Obama, Romney Face Off in Florida"). Dr. Kendall was also featured as a expert "Grading the Inaugural Address" from President Obama in Inside Higher Ed.
Assistant professor Sahar Khamis was interviewed for several media outlets, including Al Jazeera's Arabic channel, a private Syrian-resistance channel called "Orient," and an online private media production company called "globalvoicehall" on the night of the U.S. presidential election. Professor and director of graduate studies Shawn J. Parry-Giles appeared in numerous news media interviews and articles. Parry-Giles was quoted in a Baltimore Sun article about the prevalence of advertising about Maryland's ballot Question 7, an Atlanta Journal-Constitution article about debates during the presidential primaries, in a Bloomberg Businessweek article, an MSNBC online video, a Washington Post article, and articles in the Christian Science Monitor and Politico. In addition, Parry-Giles was a regular guest on the Midday Politics program with Dan Rodricks on WYPR--Baltimore's NPR affiliate station. She appeared on WYPR five times during 2012: on February 28, March 27, April 17, September 18, and October 23.
Professor Trevor Parry-Giles was quoted in articles that concerned both national and Maryland campaigns. CNN Politics articles that quoted Parry-Giles include analyses of the Romney campaign's response to fact checking and Governor Romney's persona as a CEO. He was also quoted in several stories in the Washington Examiner and The Gazette. Other stories quoting Parry-Giles appeared in The Observer in the United Kingdom and in the Maryland Gazette. Finally, Parry-Giles appeared as a guest on interview shows for Minnesota Public Radio and Wisconsin Public Radio.
