Department Of Communication Public Statement

Department is saddened and angered by racist killing of Richard Collins at UM.

We are saddened, concerned, and angered by recent racially-motivated incidents at the University of Maryland, including white supremacist flyers distributed around campus, a noose found hanging in a fraternity house, and the senseless murder of Richard W. Collins III from Bowie State University.  We recognize that these are not isolated incidents, but instead the result of pervasive racism.

We stand ready as partners and as a resource for students on campus in addressing the climate and culture in which these acts take place. People of color feel unsafe on our campus, and we affirm our commitment to making this campus safe for all members of our community by transforming productive communication into constructive action.
